Gemini Secures Singapore MPI License to Expand Crypto Services

Gemini received a Major Payment Institution (MPI) license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). This gives its Singapore entity a governed approval to provide virtual payment token and cross-border money transfer services. The license is a crucial step for the crypto exchange as it creates its presence in Singapore, serving customers since 2020.

Gemini said that this approval demonstrates its commitment to functioning within Singapore’s rules and regulations. It will help them to easily serve both retail and institutional customers. The organization currently offers spot trading, custody, and over-the-counter services for virtual assets in the country. The approval bolsters Gemini’s position in a market that has entailed a detailed framework for virtual assets and payment service providers.

Why Is Gemini’s MAS MPI License Important?

The MPI license gives Gemini Digital Payments Singapore an official regulatory status for its digital payment token and cross-border money transfer services. MAS says major payment institutions are subject to wider regulation because the magnitude of their operations can create greater risks, including requirements related to protecting customer money.

For a crypto firm, working under a governed framework can provide greater clarity about the services the exchange has to provide in the market. Gemini’s license therefore represents more than an expansion. It places the company’s operations within the nation’s established payment government system.

For Gemini, the approval also bolsters its position in Singapore’s governed digital asset market. Cameron Winklevoss, Gemini’s president and co-founder,said acquiring the license validates the company’s investment and commitment to Singapore.

CEO and co-founder Tyler Winklevoss described the nation’s regulatory framework and financial center status as a key hub for the organization. The license also comes after a long regulatory process. Gemini had prior received in-principle approval for an MPI license and has been working towards full approval. The latest approval completes the process and positions Gemini Singapore operations under the official MPI framework.

The comments from the company’s leadership indicates their cooperation and willingness to adhere to the rules at the core of their operations and keep Singapore as a crucial part of their expansion. The development is salient because Gemini has been serving Singapore customers since 2020. With the entire MPI license now in position, the company can continue its native operations with the approval necessary for its formatted digital payment token and cross-border transfer activities.

How Will the Approval Help Gemini and Which Other Companies Have It?

The permission allows Gemini to provide virtual payment token and cross-border money transfer services through its Singapore entity. This gives the company a stronger foundation for continuing its native operations and serving both retail and institutional customers.

The approval could also help Gemini build trust among customers and businesses who prefer to use platforms under a known regulatory framework. It gives the company a better base for its services while allowing it to continue offering its existing spot trading, custody and OTC services in Singapore.

Gemini is not the only major crypto company operating under Singapore’s MPI framework. The MAS Financial Institutions Directory currently lists 37 institutions with major payment institutions status and digital payment token service, including companies such as Coinbase, OKX, Crypto.com, Blockchain.com, Bitstamp, Independent Reserve, and Paxos.

Other licensed names include Anchorage Digital, BitGo, Circle, Ripple, Revolut, Upbit Singapore, StraitsX and Sygnum. The MAS directory shows that the license has become a crucial regulatory framework for a wide range of virtual asset and payment companies functioning in Singapore.

For Gemini, the approval puts its Singapore business within the same environment as other established crypto and financial technology organizations. It also gives Gemini a better path to continue expanding its governed digital asset services in a market the company considers a strategic hub for its working.
