How Much Bitcoin Do Institutions Hold? Estimates Top 2 Million BTC

Institutions, companies and governments now hold close to 2 million Bitcoin, according to data highlighted by OKX Ventures, putting a significant portion of the cryptocurrency’s supply in the hands of entities that are not individual retail holders. The figure includes Bitcoin attributed to corporate treasuries, institutional investors and government holdings, although the exact total varies between tracking platforms depending on which entities and categories are included. Recent treasury data also shows that companies and governments continue to hold substantial Bitcoin positions, with Strategy remaining the largest corporate holder and the United States among the largest government holders. The growing number of disclosed holdings provides a way to measure how much Bitcoin is being held through corporate and public-sector balance sheets, although these figures do not by themselves indicate how the holders intend to use or retain their Bitcoin.

How Much Bitcoin Do Strategy And Other Treasury Firms Hold?

The nearly 2 million BTC figure reflects the amount of Bitcoin attributed to institutions, companies and governments across available treasury data. The exact figure can change as companies disclose new purchases, governments update their holdings and tracking platforms revise their estimates.

Corporate treasuries account for a significant part of the holdings being tracked.CoinGecko’s Bitcoin treasury tracker lists, as of September 22 Strategy with about 845,050 BTC, making it the largest corporate holder on its tracker. The same database also lists companies such as Twenty One Capital and Metaplanet among the larger corporate holders. BitcoinTreasuries.net separately tracks 1,273,172 BTC held by public companies and another 284,650 BTC attributed to private companies. Its figures are separate from government holdings, which it places, as of September 22 at 645,573 BTC.

Some databases track only publicly disclosed corporate holdings, while others include private companies, government entities, funds, ETFs or other categories. These holdings can result from direct purchases, mining activity or acquisitions, meaning that not every increase represents the same type of market activity. The balance-sheet figures therefore show how much Bitcoin companies report holding, rather than providing a direct measure of buying pressure.

How Much Bitcoin Do The US, China And UK Governments Hold?

Governments represent another portion of the Bitcoin attributed to large institutional holders. CoinGecko’s government tracker places, as of September 22 13 government entities with a combined 619,463 BTC. The United States is listed with 329,693 BTC, followed by China with 190,000 BTC and the United Kingdom with 61,245 BTC.

Another tracker, BitcoinTreasuries.net, lists, as of September 22 government holdings at 645,573 BTC. The difference between the two estimates illustrates how reported totals can vary depending on the source and methodology used. Government holdings can also have different origins from corporate treasury positions. Some Bitcoin held by governments comes from seizures or asset recoveries rather than purchases made as part of a treasury strategy. This distinction matters when interpreting the overall figure because possession of Bitcoin does not necessarily mean an entity decided to allocate its reserves toward the asset.

Why Trackers Disagree On Institutional Bitcoin Holdings

The concentration of holdings among a relatively small number of entities is another factor to consider. Strategy alone accounts for more than 845,000 BTC in CoinGecko’s current data, while the United States and China together account for more than 500,000 BTC in the same database. The nearly 2 million BTC figure therefore provides a snapshot of reported ownership across several categories. It does not establish how long these entities will hold their Bitcoin, whether they plan additional purchases or what effect their holdings will have on the wider market. Those factors can change as companies update their treasuries, governments disclose new information and tracking databases revise their estimates.
